Reflective journey of a 9 year old

Todays post is a guest blog from my 9 year old son as he shares his experience of home schooling during lockdown. This was a task that has been set this week to share with his teacher and class. I was so proud of his reflection and achievements that I wanted to share his open, honest and truthful reflection which is written from his heart.

Henry’s lockdown journey

At the start of lockdown on Monday 23rd March 2020, I felt really good about home schooling. I got up early and cracked on with the work which was set. My day started at 8:45am with maths, which is my favourite subject and because the work set was recapping what I had already done in school, I found it easy.

Our school trip to Eyam was cancelled which I was disappointed about, however I’ve already been to Eyam so enjoyed all the activities that Miss B set especially making a cottage and a stained glass window which my mum proudly shared on twitter.

After the Easter holidays it was more difficult to get motivated and I felt lazy, however I still managed to get the work done which was set. All of the work was new learning so this became more challenging where I had lots of questions and didn’t know who to ask other than my mum, dad and older brother, George. I left things until last minute and then mum helped me to take away the pressure.

George has been a big support to me and there were days when we sat together at the dining room table and became co-workers with my dad whilst he worked from home. This was when I started to work independently on tasks set. I enjoyed marking my maths work and Miss B recognised all my hard work by sharing my success with Mrs L where I received the Head Teachers award which I was extremely proud about.

At the beginning of May, I was due to go on a 3 day residential to Bogglehole and was looking forward to having fun with my friends. This has been the hardest part of not going to school, the lack of socialising,  so I was really pleased after May half term when we had Microsoft teams set up and I could communicate with my friends once again.

Overall, I have had mixed emotions about my lockdown journey with plenty of tears and laughter along the way and I am excited to be returning to school for the last 2 weeks of term to see Miss B and all my friends.

Henry Cahill, Age 9 years

I think it's fair to say that our children have had the same mix of emotions that we have had as adults. They've become resilient and faced challenges head on, overcoming their mental motivation challenges, recognising the importance of effective communication and how valuable friendships are to feel connected.

Children are the leaders of the future and I've felt proud to support mine on their journey through lockdown and with home schooling despite it being challenging whilst trying to run a business and adjust to the 'new norm', whatever that may be.

I hope you've found inspiration by reading the words of my youngest son who makes a difference to the world I live in daily.
